This was my first time reading Radar – I bought this novella and his “Just keep running” upon learning he’d just become a parent – Congratulations, Radar and family! At 33 pages, this is a one-sitting read, which deals with a creature that feeds on fear, collecting that fear from its chosen subject, to collect and bring back to its master. So pretty much Monsters Inc. I guess, but without the cute furry monster and with more of an emphasis on torturing a child through psychological warfare.

This isn’t a book where you get to empathize with the monster, and to a degree, my empathy for the victim was also removed through this dissociation of the monster – he is there to invoke fear. But Radar highlights the various stages in a woman’s downfall, as she becomes increasingly unlucky and downtrodden. Her eventual fall from grace and downward spiral is seen from chapter to chapter, the monster itself watching it and only worrying about how its quota of fear will be affected. The fact that the spiral is caused by the monster’s continued interference is irrelevant to it, and that distance made the writing interesting, but also distant.
The writing was clean, and the flow was good – I’m looking forward to reading the other book I bought from Radar. I’m giving this 3 ⭐’s out of 5

I read Tricksters in two sittings, the first segment I was a passenger in my car as my son drove us the 250 km to my in-law’s house, which provided a tense enough environment in which to enjoy McLaughlin’s gore fest, and the second was that night in bed, unable to sleep because I actually wanted to finish the book. So, I grabbed my Kindle and ploughed through to the end of the book. As a result, I have to say that neither is a great place to read a book like Tricksters. In a car, you get so into the action that when you look up suddenly, you are completely disorientated and are sure you are going to die, and in bed, you finish the book and realize you are completely awake and will be for the next three hours, coming down off your dopamine high from the tension-porn you just read.
Tricksters is great.
The setup is great. The characters are great. You get that small-town secret ‘vibe’ that Kealan Patrick Burke perfected in “Kin”. You know that bad people are going to do bad things, and enjoy doing them as it happens, and that you are invited in to witness it all. On the one hand, you want the helpless food to have a chance. Good for them if they manage to get away for a little while. On the other hand, you are enjoying the sheer amount of fun the Tricksters are enjoying as they play with their food.
This was an easy 5 ⭐ read, and one to blast through in one, max two sittings.
Just don’t do it in a car, or in bed, expecting to go to sleep afterwards.

In a similar theme to Laurel Hightower’s Crossroads – at its core, In the darkness… is about grief, and refusing to let go of what was once a source of joy in your life. However, much like Hightower’s novel, what comes back is similar to what you once lost, but there’s something not quite right…
The mounting sense of dread and the denial Felix manages to inject into the story made this a whirlwind, on the one side I was wishing the cat on to more and more bloody retribution, on the other, I wanted someone to kill the zombie cat!
There’s elements of self-humour in the book which I liked, this isn’t taking itself too seriously, yet the messages of grief, denial, hope and what you will do to keep that hope alive provided all of the horror I needed for a great night’s read.
Loved this introduction to Felix’s work, and I’ll be buying more from him.
My apologies on my tardiness in reviewing, but I got here in the end.

T.C., or Nat as I know her, believes Politics are everything - are in fact the core of all arguments, the defining attributes which make us human, and she weaponizes unfavourable politics in order to produce the most frighteningly real and plausible horror stories that grace the page in today’s horror community.

Tradwife is horrible.
It’s that ugly uncovering of all too real racism, sexism, and homophobic bigotry that exists as reality all over the world, not least of which in America and England. You can almost see it as a glimpse into the not-too-distant future (our NOW, given the book was published in 2024) where active acts of rebellion are not only required, but to be silently applauded.
“A book for our times” would not be too bold a statement. It really should be required reading. Female rage has never been so opportune. And so needed.

Like an ugly, dead baby, it demands your complete focus, as layer after layer of skin is peeled back during the autopsy, the book flayed raw by Nat’s insistence we face the ugly undercurrents of our own society – how the church has weaponized sexism, how politics can be twisted to serve older, prehistoric notions of a woman’s “place” in society, and the requirements those politicians demand of women – namely to shut up and breed. Preferably following the commands of their husbands. Who know best.
